The Same Water, Different Results

Sometimes God is strengthening us. Sometimes He's softening us. And sometimes He's doing both.

Have you ever heard the saying, "The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg"?

I've heard it before, but recently I found myself thinking about it a little differently.

The water is the same. The temperature is the same. Yet the results are completely different.

And you know what? Neither result is wrong.

The potato becomes softer, while the egg becomes firmer. Both are changed by their experience, just in different ways.

It made me think about how God works in our lives.

We all walk through different seasons. Some are filled with joy and excitement, while others require a little more patience, faith, and trust. And although our circumstances may sometimes look similar to someone else's, what we need during those seasons may be entirely different.

Maybe one person needs to become stronger, while another needs to become softer. And perhaps both are exactly where God is working.

Sometimes We Need to Become Stronger

There are seasons when we need to find the courage to stand firm.

Maybe we've spent so much time trying to please everyone that we've forgotten it's okay to say no. Maybe we've allowed fear to keep us from taking a step of faith. Or perhaps we've been leaning on our own understanding instead of trusting what God has placed before us.

Sometimes growth means finding our voice, establishing healthy boundaries, or learning to trust God enough to take that next step, even when we can't see where it leads.

And isn't it comforting to know that we don't have to find that strength entirely on our own?

Isaiah 40:31 reminds us:

"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." (KJV)

Our strength doesn't have to come from having all the answers. Sometimes it simply comes from knowing Who walks beside us.

Sometimes We Need to Become Softer

Then there are seasons when God may be teaching us something entirely different.

Maybe we've become so accustomed to handling everything ourselves that we've forgotten how to ask for help.

Perhaps we're holding tightly to a plan because we're convinced we know the best way forward. Or maybe we need a little more patience, understanding, or willingness to listen.

I can certainly relate to wanting to have everything figured out!

But sometimes the most beautiful growth happens when we loosen our grip and remember that God sees so much more than we do.

Becoming softer doesn't mean becoming weaker. It can mean becoming more willing to trust, more compassionate toward others, and more open to the gentle ways God is leading us.

And sometimes surrender requires just as much courage as standing firm.

What If We Need Both?

Here's something else I've been thinking about.

What if God is strengthening us in one area while softening us in another?

We can become stronger in our convictions while becoming gentler in our conversations.

We can grow more confident in our faith while becoming more willing to admit that we don't have all the answers.

We can learn to establish boundaries while still loving people deeply.

We can stand firm in what we believe while extending grace to someone whose journey looks different from our own.

Strength and tenderness can grow together.

And perhaps that's part of the beauty of walking with God. He knows exactly where we are, what we've experienced, and what we need as we continue growing.

Different Journeys, the Same Faithful God

One of the things I find most encouraging about this illustration is the reminder that we don't need to compare our journey with someone else's.

The potato doesn't need to become an egg. And the egg doesn't need to become a potato.

They are different, and that's perfectly okay.

God created each of us with unique personalities, gifts, experiences, and purposes. The work He's doing in my life may look different from the work He's doing in yours.

And that's okay, too.

Philippians 1:6 offers such a beautiful reminder:

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:" (KJV)

I love that promise.

God hasn't finished working in us.

We don't have to have everything figured out today. We don't have to measure our progress against someone else's. And we certainly don't have to become someone we were never created to be.

We can simply keep drawing closer to Him, trusting that He is faithful to continue the work He has begun.

A Gentle Reminder for the Journey

So, the next time you hear that familiar saying about the potato and the egg, perhaps you'll think about it a little differently.

Instead of asking whether life's circumstances are making you harder or softer, maybe ask:

Father, what are You teaching me in this season? Where do I need to become stronger? Where might I need to become more tender, more patient, or more willing to trust You?

And perhaps the answer will be a little of both.

Whatever season you find yourself in today, I hope you'll remember that your journey doesn't have to look like anyone else's.

God knows your heart. He knows your needs. And He knows the person He created you to be.

The goal isn't to become harder or softer. The goal is to become more like Him.

And what a beautiful journey that can be.

With love and encouragement,
