When You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going

When You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going

There is a quote often attributed to Winston Churchill:

“If you’re going through hell, keep going.”

Whether Churchill actually said those exact words or not, the message is powerful.

Because when life gets hard—really hard—our natural reaction is often to stop.

We stop believing. We stop hoping. We stop trying.Sometimes, we even stop praying.

Pain has a way of convincing us that where we are right now is where we are going to stay.

But I want you to notice one very important word:

Through.

You are going through it.

You are not supposed to build a house there. You are not supposed to unpack your bags there. You are not supposed to make your pain your permanent address.

You are going through it.

Some Roads Are Harder Than Others

There are seasons in life when everything seems to come at once.

A diagnosis.

A financial problem.

A broken relationship.

The death of someone you love.

A dream that falls apart.

A prayer that seems to go unanswered.

And sometimes there isn’t one big disaster. Sometimes it is simply the weight of a hundred little things piling up until you finally whisper,

“Lord, I don’t know how much more I can take.”

I’ve had moments like that.

Maybe you have too.

Those are the moments when faith becomes more than something we talk about on Sunday.

Faith becomes the decision to put one foot in front of the other when you cannot see very far down the road.

God Never Promised an Easy Road

Jesus never promised His followers a trouble-free life.

In fact, He said:

“In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33

Notice what Jesus did not say.

He did not say, “You might have trouble.”

He said we will have trouble.

But He also told us something far more important:

He has overcome the world.

Your trouble may be real.

Your pain may be real.

Your fear may be real.

But none of those things are greater than God.

Don’t Make Permanent Decisions in Temporary Pain

One of the most dangerous things we can do during a difficult season is convince ourselves that nothing will ever change.

Pain has a loud voice.

It tells you:

“This is never going to get better.”

“You’ll always feel this way.”

“God has forgotten you.”

“There is no way forward.”

But pain does not know the future.

God does.

The Bible says:

“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” — Psalm 30:5

The night may feel long.

Sometimes painfully long.

But morning still comes.

Sometimes Victory Looks Like One More Step

We often picture victory as something dramatic.

A miracle.

A breakthrough.

A door suddenly opening.

And sometimes God works exactly that way.

But sometimes victory looks much simpler.

Getting out of bed.

Going to the appointment.

Making the phone call.

Taking your medicine.

Praying one more prayer.

Reading one more verse.

Choosing not to quit today.

Sometimes the bravest prayer you can pray is:

“Lord, just help me get through today.”

And that is enough.

You do not have to figure out the next ten years.

You do not even have to figure out next month.

Sometimes God gives us enough strength for the next step.

Then the next.

Then the next.

God Walks Through the Fire With You

One of my favorite stories in the Bible is the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

They were thrown into a fiery furnace because they refused to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar’s idol.

The king looked into the furnace and was shocked.

He said:

“Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt.” — Daniel 3:25

God did not keep them from entering the fire.

He met them in the fire.

Friend, sometimes God removes the problem.

Sometimes He changes the circumstances.

And sometimes He walks right into the fire with us and says,

“You are not facing this alone.”

Keep Going

Maybe today you feel like you are walking through your own version of hell.

Maybe you are tired.

Maybe you are discouraged.

Maybe you have been fighting the same battle for longer than anyone around you realizes.

Then hear me clearly:

Keep going.

Not because the road is easy.

Not because you understand everything.

Not because you feel strong.

Keep going because God is still with you.

Keep going because your story is not finished.

Keep going because things can change.

Keep going because there are prayers you have not seen answered yet.

Keep going because someone may need the testimony you are living right now.

And most importantly, keep going because God has not let go of you.

A Prayer for the Journey

Father,

For the person reading this who feels tired, discouraged, and overwhelmed, please remind them that they are not walking alone.

Give them strength for today.

Give them courage for the next step.

When fear tells them to quit, remind them of Your promises.

When they cannot see the road ahead, help them trust the One who can.

And when they feel like they cannot take another step, carry them.

Thank You for being with us in the valley, in the storm, and even in the fire.

Help us remember that we are going through this.

We are not staying here.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Friend, if you’re going through hell today, keep going.

Your pain is not your destination.

Your struggle is not the end of your story.

And as long as God is still writing the story, there is still hope for the journey.
